The Caucasian country of Georgia could be served by a new charter airline as soon as this September following successful talks with two eastern European investors.
Aero Georgia is aiming to launch flights with a single narrow-body aircraft capable of carrying up to 150 passengers, Igor Aptsiauri, the company’s chief executive, told me in a telephone interview.
“This will be the first time that Georgia will have a purely charter airline,” he said.
“What we have noticed here in Georgia is that there’s a very big demand for charters. And not only in Georgia … If we look at the big airlines in eastern Europe and the CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] region, the ones that are doing more or less OK financially are all charter airlines.”
Aptsiauri is a former deputy director of the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency and until recently held the title of commercial director at MyWay Airlines, a Chinese-backed scheduled carrier based in Tbilisi.
The business plan for the charter airline was developed by Aero Georgia Group, a new company launched by several former employees of MyWay.

Its activities span consultancy, travel agency services, general sales agent (GSA) representation and external project management. Other initiatives being pursued by the Group include organizing an annual aviation conference in Georgia and drafting a national strategy paper to strengthen the local sector.
Aptsiauri declined to identify the investors behind the charter carrier, but said a shareholder agreement has been drawn up and their “final decision” is imminent.

“We want to start the certification process as early as possible, because it will take another six to seven months [before the airline is fully licensed],” he noted. “Then we still have a chance to start operations from maybe September, October of this year.”
